Not a day goes by anymore without Donald Trump and his administration shattering some norm or acting in a lawless manner. On Thursday, it became clear that an independent judiciary no longer exists in the US.

“JUSTICE IN AMERICA!” Donald Trump crowed after the US attorney he hand-picked just last week to indict his political enemies did her job. And, indeed, this is what “justice” now looks like in the US: a judiciary that is supposed to be independent doing the bidding of the most corrupt president in history.
It is unclear to us how many wake-up calls Americans need to understand what Trump is doing to their country. We are not talking about the 30 percent who would let him get away with nearly anything (with the possible exception of the “wonderful secret[s]” he shared with his old pal Jeffrey Epstein).
We are talking about the rest, who are witnessing this president say and do things that would have doomed any other administration.
On a daily basis, Trump is pushing and shattering boundaries of executive authority, long-standing norms, and common human decency.
Thursday night’s indictment of former FBI Director James Comey is yet another low in a sprint to the bottom… and toward a full-fledged autocracy.
Even though Comey helped Trump get elected with his letter notifying Congress that he was reviewing additional documents related to the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server, the president considers him as one of his main enemies.
And as such, the former FBI director, and apparently anybody else who has crossed Trump or says mean things about him on TV, is either in direct legal jeopardy or is being threatened by the president.
Everything about Comey’s indictment is contrived… the manner in which it came to be, the timing, and the grand jury’s refusal to indict him on another count.
Here are the CliffsNotes: Right before the statute of limitations expired, a Trump loyalist who was appointed last week brought charges against one of the president’s “enemies,” i.e., someone who stood up to him.
The new US attorney, Lindsey Halligan, brought the charges over the objections of her subordinates and only after her predecessor was fired for refusing to do so.
Then there is the crime itself. Comey is accused of lying to Congress and obstructing justice.
This is really the only positive thing about this sordid affair, because we strongly support this precedent. If this is the way things are going to be now, then we are excited about the investigations into the likes of Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, etc. in a few years.
Back to Comey.
Trump, who is the only reason why this indictment came to be, celebrated this “victory.”
“JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey, the former Corrupt Head of the FBI,” he wrote. “Today he was indicted by a Grand Jury on two felony counts for various illegal and unlawful acts. He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation.”
A jury will ultimately decide whether Comey is guilty, and no official should lie under oath (or not under oath… like a certain president who has told thousands of lies in office), but making a false statement to Congress is hardly “a crime against our Nation.”
For his part, Comey is doing what he has been doing for the past few years: He is standing up to Trump.
In a video message posted after news of the indictment broke, the former FBI director said that he and his family “have known for years” that there is a price for doing so.
“We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn’t either,” Comey said.
“Somebody that I love dearly recently said that fear is the tool of a tyrant and she is right,” he added.
This is a reference to his daughter Maurene, who was fired earlier this year from the US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York and penned a scathing farewell email at the time.
“But I am not afraid, and I hope you are not either,” Comey said. “I hope instead you are engaged, you are paying attention, and you will vote like your beloved country depends upon it, which it does.”
The former FBI director also stated that “his heart is broken for the Department of Justice.” However, he added that he has confidence in the judicial system.
“I am innocent,” Comey said. “So let’s have a trial and keep the faith.”
We wish Americans would heed his words… and that we could keep the faith in them.
