The Absolutely Typical and Totally Crazy Day of Donald J. Trump
Lies, threats to US democracy, more lies, and attempts to get his name on stuff. We take a look at a normal day in the life of an abnormal president.

We periodically want to remind people that the president of the United States of America is nuts… not because we particularly enjoy doing so, but because we believe it is important not to normalize his insanity.
Any number of things Donald Trump does and says on a daily basis would end the careers of other politicians, result in major investigations, or trigger endless media coverage regarding their (lack of) fitness for office.
In his case, however, people for the most part just shrug because everybody, including his supporters on some level, know that he is a man suffering from severe mental disorders.
By the way, it’s important to note that today wasn’t even particularly crazy. We could also have written a version of this yesterday, and we are quite sure we could do it again tomorrow.
So, without further ado, let’s look at what happened in the life of Donald J. Trump on Thursday.
It began with an appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast. We’ll skip over the parts where he continuously bore false witness, went after his political adversaries, and proclaimed that “religion is back now hotter than ever before,” which might not be a historically accurate statement.
But those are all unimportant sideshows.
And, while they are much more problematic, we also won’t dwell on his boasts about selling Venezuela’s oil or the fact that he threatened to revoke the tax-exempt status of churches that say bad things about him.
What matters most is that he keeps laying the groundwork for rigging the midterms in the GOP’s favor. That was a major theme this week. From the FBI raid on an election center in Fulton County that involved Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard for some reason, to statements Trump made about wanting to federalize elections, it is pretty clear that he has no intention of letting the American people decide the midterms if he can help it.
On Thursday, for example, he used his remarks at the prayer breakfast to falsely claim that he won the popular vote in 2016, when Hillary Clinton bested him by nearly three million votes.
Essentially, what he wants people to believe is that the Democrats, whom he once again accused of cheating, were able to rig the popular vote in Clinton’s favor but somehow allowed him to win the Electoral College.
But it doesn’t matter to Republicans that none of his accusations make sense. They just want to stay in power, and that means putting all of their thumbs on the scales in November.
Passing the SAVE Act, which is now the SAVE America Act, is a major part of that strategy because, under the guise of fighting a problem that doesn’t exist, it will help suppress the votes of millions of Americans who are more likely than not to cast their ballots for Democrats, i.e., minorities, young people, and women.
For example, more than 10 percent of voters of color don’t have the documents that the bill requires them to present to be allowed to vote.
Of course, disenfranchising 10 percent of these voters is a great deal for Republicans, which is why they are working hard to get the Senate to pass the bill.
And Trump is leading the way.
In a social media post, he falsely claimed* that “America’s Elections are Rigged, Stolen, and a Laughingstock all over the World” before calling on Republicans to pass the Save America Act and to forbid most mail-in voting, which is another area where Democrats used to have an advantage.
The frequency with which Trump talks about this is troubling and shows how much losing in November is on his mind. Obviously, a lot is at stake for him personally and politically, which is why we expect him and his allies to use all levers of power to prevail.
We cannot stress enough that this is the most important issue before us and not one Americans can afford to ignore.
So, what else happened in Trump’s day?
Apparently, the president is trying to hold vital infrastructure funding for New York and New Jersey hostage until Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) agrees to rename Virginia’s Dulles International Airport and New York City’s Penn Station after him.
Then, in a rare evening event, he once again demonstrated that he doesn’t know how math works.
In between those public appearances, Trump found the time to take to social media to claim that he stopped multiple nuclear wars last year.
And, perhaps, there is more to come. Depending on what he sees on Fox news, Trump might still fire off dozens of social media posts with insane conspiracy theories or threats to prosecute his predecessors.
In other words, it’s just another Thursday… which is really disconcerting.
*When we say that this is false, we mean that it is incorrect in the way Trump claims that elections are rigged. While he keeps saying that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him, the president has never been able to present any evidence to back up that claim. We, however, can demonstrably prove how Republicans have been trying to suppress votes to win elections for decades.
