If Tom Homan did not accept a $50,000 bribe, and his encounter with federal agents is on tape, surely "the most transparent administration in history" will release that exonerating evidence any moment now.

We are never going to be surprised when we learn that a senior member of the Trump administration did something shady, unconstitutional, or blatantly illegal. That was also the case when news broke this weekend that the Department of Justice made an investigation into Tom Homan go away, after he allegedly accepted a bag full of cash last year in exchange for promising undercover agents that he would steer federal contracts their way if Donald Trump won the election.
Did Homan break any laws? Honestly, that seems doubtful. After all, the transaction supposedly happened last September. At that time, Trump hadn’t been elected and Homan held no position in the federal government.
For there to be a potential crime, he probably would have had to follow through on that promise, and it seems highly unlikely that he would be that dumb because surely, before killing the probe, Department of Justice officials would have told Homan that he was a potential target.
In a way, it’s similar to the allegations against Hunter Biden, who accepted money for being close to the president.
Shady? Yes!
Potentially corrupt? Yes.
Illegal? Only if he actually sold access.
There are a couple of things that are noteworthy about the Homan situation.
The first is that the current border czar was reportedly taped when accepting a bag with $50,000 in cash.
The second is that this case is yet more evidence that the GOP’s accusations of a weaponized DOJ under Biden are without merit. After all, if there is a tape out there, why wasn’t it made public to help the Democrats ahead of the election?
On Monday, Homan did what Republicans embroiled in scandals do: He went on Fox News and said it’s all just a witch hunt.
“I did nothing criminal,” said Homan, who notably did not deny taking that money. “I did nothing illegal.”
Again, that is likely true, but accepting a bribe isn’t a good look for a lawman.
Unsurprisingly, the White House also had his back.
“Mr. Homan did absolutely nothing wrong, and even the president’s Department of Justice, even Kash Patel’s FBI looked into this just to make sure — they had a number of different prosecutors and FBI agents who looked into this — they found zero evidence of illegal activity or criminal wrongdoing,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
We would take issue with her use of the word “even” because it is hardly surprising that the most partisan DOJ and the most partisan FBI director in history found nothing wrong with what Homan did.
Then, however, Leavitt said something else.
“Mr. Homan never took the $50,000, so you should get your facts straight,” she told a reporter who asked about the story.
Well, now we are interested.
Because if the agents taped their encounter with Homan, then the administration should be eager to release that video to clear his name… if their version of events is correct and he didn’t take that bag with $50,000 that was presented to him.
This shouldn’t be a problem for the most transparent administration in history, so we’ll just wait patiently until that exonerating evidence is made public.
