When Nancy Mace vowed on Wednesday to put the safety of American women and girls first, could she have been referring to Donald Trump? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is satire… kind of. It’s certainly tongue-in-cheek. Then again, prove us wrong.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), a survivor of rape and a passionate advocate for victims of sexual violence, on Wednesday seemed to call out Donald Trump in a social media post putting sexual predators on notice that she would put American girls and women first.

“No man, no ideology, and no agenda comes before the safety of our daughters,” wrote Mace.

Even for a lawmaker who frequently finds herself embroiled in controversies (that are often of her own making), this is a bold move. After all, she is expected to launch a gubernatorial campaign in the Palmetto State, which Trump won by nearly 18 points last year.

Therefore, pointing out that she will put the safety of women ahead of even the leader of her own party, who has a long and well-documented history as alleged, adjudicated, and self-professed sexual abuser, is fraught with political peril.

Now, you might be saying: “Wait a minute; she doesn’t mention Trump by name.”

A fair point.

However, as political observers and analysts, we occasionally have to interpret brief, perhaps even nebulous or cryptic, statements from politicians and fill in some of the gaps.

For example, when Trump wrote “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” almost eight years ago to this day, we had to parse this presidential tweet for a deeper meaning that his aides assured us was there.

In this case, once you are armed with all of the facts, you have to wonder who else Mace could possibly be referring to.

After all, Trump has been found liable for sexual abuse, he has admitted, on tape, that he kisses women and grabs their genitals without their consent, and he has been credibly accused of various types of sexual assault by more than two dozen women who were brave enough to share their experiences in public.

Knowing that Nancy Mace is holding the line for them, even if the predator is the most powerful man in the nation, and that no ideology and no agenda will come before their safety, must be a great comfort to these women.

This is especially true because so many Republicans have been downplaying Trump’s conduct as “locker room talk” or dismissed it as political smears even though the president has bragged about doing exactly the thing he was accused of.

In fact, it is even a bit of a departure for Mace, who in the past has taken Trump’s side on the issue and shamed author E. Jean Carroll for how she dealt with the sexual abuse the president was held liable for.

Still, better late than never, so we are delighted that Mace has taken a stance that should not be controversial at all but, among Republicans, has amounted to lèse-majesté, i.e., the crime of insulting a monarch.
