Five Weeks Ahead of the Midterms, It’s ‘A Caravan Is Headed for the Border’ Time

09/28/26

If you were worried that the midterms will be the first US election in years without news of a migrant caravan in Mexico spurring GOP voters into action, then we have some excellent news for you.

There are some phenomena in our universe that happen with stunning regularity. Our planet completes a trip around the sun every 365.25 days, Halley’s Comet appears in the sky every 75 years (or so), and, ahead of any US election, a caravan of migrants materializes in Central America.

This year is no different.

Just in time to rile up Republicans ahead of the midterms by injecting some xenophobia into tight races, a video is circulating in the MAGAsphere that shows a procession of individuals making their way through Mexico right now. Their goal, according to right-wing influencers, is to reach the US border when Democrats win control of Congress and allow them to “invade” the United States.

“THEY ARE ALREADY MOVING THROUGH MEXICO BECAUSE THEY THINK AMERICA MIGHT BLINK,” commented America First keyboard warrior David Freeman, aka Gunther Eagleman. “Trump secured the border. Democrats want it back open. That caravan is a bet on blue victories in November and 2028.”

He then urges his 1.7 million Twitter followers to “vote red.”

Eric Daugherty, another MAGA influencer and adherent to the “Donald Trump Style Guide on Capitalization and Punctuation,” voiced a nearly identical message.

“A migrant caravan just RUSHED into Mexico and is now full steam ahead to the U.S. Southern Border This is NOT a freaking game!” he told his 1.1 million followers. “THEY ARE WAITING FOR DEMOCRATS TO TAKE POWER VOTE RED!!”

We hate to disagree with him, but it sure feels like a game, or at least a ruse.

Don’t take it from us, though; take it from former GOP Congresswoman and current Trump critic Marjorie Taylor Greene, who used to play it herself.

“We have not seen a caravan headed to the U.S. southern border in several years, why now?” she tweeted. “Oh yeah, there is an election coming and the GOP needs to scare you into voting because nothing else is working.”

Finally, Trump mouthpiece, Fox News host, and MAGA operative Laura Ingraham spelled things out for her 5.3 million followers.

“This migrant caravan is not good news for Dems,” she wrote. “Reminds voters about the worst of Biden and Dems.”

Of course, according to the president, the border is now completely sealed off, so there is no chance that these migrants will be able to enter the US when this caravan gets there (in a couple of months). The Department of Homeland Security certainly doesn’t seem to think so.

It posted this tweet in response to the news of the caravan (slowly) approaching the border.

Based on that post, it sure seems like a game to them.

In any case, it defies belief that a bunch of Hondurans are politically astute enough to time their arrival at the border with a Democratic victory in November but don’t understand that this won’t make much of a difference to the nation’s immigration policies until next year (if even then), when the newly elected Congress will be sworn in.

Then again, all those MAGA influencers are counting on their followers being even more ignorant than that, so anything is possible.
