After he was found liable in 2023 of sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll, Donald Trump could have just paid the $5 million awarded to her, and the case would have been forgotten by now among all of his other misdeeds. Instead, he kept talking about the verdict and lodged one long-shot appeal after another. And each time he was denied, Americans were reminded that a jury concluded that he was guilty of the exact thing that he has admitted to in the past.
We are not sure whether this is one of those 4D chess moves that Trump’s supporters attribute to him. If it is, he is going to have to find another way to remind people of what he did because, as of Monday, he is officially out of legal options to overturn the jury’s verdict and that $5 million judgment.
In a routine notice, the Supreme Court announced that it would not reconsider an earlier decision not to review the judgement, which also included a finding that Trump defamed the writer.
It’s always been a bit baffling to us that the president has kept this case in the news with his own statements and appeals.
After all, the jury’s finding of sexual abuse is consistent with behavior Trump boasted about on the infamous Access Hollywood tape. In that conversation with Billy Bush, he bragged that he routinely sexually assaulted women by grabbing and kissing them against their will, and that he could get away with it because he is famous.
Therefore, his claims of “I didn’t do it” ring very hollow.
It also can’t be that he is worried about paying the $5 million. In just the first year of his second term, Trump amassed $2.2 billion (that we know of) through some unprecedented grifting and other shady ventures.
That means that he could pay off more than 400 women… and he has “only” been accused of sexually assaulting two dozen or so.
Then again, we are not strategic masterminds like Trump, so there must be a reason why he wants to keep reminding people of the verdict.
In that case, we have great news for the president: Since he has separately asked the Supreme Court to overturn an $83.3 million verdict for defaming Carroll, we will get to write about that jury finding and the sexual abuse case again when it reaches a decision on whether to take up that appeal.
