There is perhaps nothing Donald Trump wants more than a Nobel Peace Prize. Does the deal between Israel and Hamas that could end the conflict in the Gaza Strip put him at the top of the list for the award?

It is no secret that Donald Trump has been pining for a Nobel Peace Prize, and he and his allies must think that the US president is getting closer to that achievement after he announced on Wednesday that both Israel and Hamas have agreed to a deal that would end the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
“This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” he wrote in a social media post.
First of all, let’s give credit where credit is due: It seems unlikely that this agreement could have been brokered without Trump. Whereas European leaders have been trying to use delicate diplomacy to achieve peace between two parties who don’t really seem to want it, the US president unapologetically bullied both Israel and Hamas to the negotiating table.
Trump’s unpredictability and volatility also worked in his favor.
Tel Aviv has never had a problem with stringing along past presidents or spurning the European Union, which is especially true for current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Due to Israel’s history and special role in the region, he could always count on his allies letting him get away with major violations of international rights.
But Trump is a loose cannon, and there is no telling what he will do if anybody, even an ally like Netanyahu, gets in the way of his pursuit of a Nobel Peace Prize.
Because, to the US president, that is the ultimate goal, not achieving a ceasefire.
He probably loathes nobody more than Barack Obama, and he got one, so Trump wants one, too.
We believe that, more than anything else, that is why the US president is so intent on brokering peace deals between countries he couldn’t find on a map.
Ultimately, does it matter why countries stop fighting each other? Not really. But it is more than ridiculous that the driving force behind these agreements is the ambition of one of the world’s great narcissists.
All that being said, will this deal, which Trump says could lead to “everlasting peace” in the region, be enough?
First of all, we don’t think Obama should have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize. And a year ago, we said nobody was currently deserving of the award because of all of the conflicts across the globe.
In that regard, Trump can actually point to a record of accomplishment.
However, we think it would be a travesty if he ever went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize because of the other side of his ledger.
Brokering agreements between governments afraid that Trump will punish them with tariffs that could cripple their economies is all well and good, but it’s not enough to outdo the pain and suffering the US president is causing with his other policies across the globe.
The tariffs are one thing; withholding foreign aid that could prevent millions of deaths through 2030 is another.
And you can’t give the world’s most prestigious award to an authoritarian who keeps threatening other countries with annihilation, is building a domestic army of masked goons to go after immigrants, and wants to use the military on his own people for protesting.
Or to a man who undermines democracy and attempted a coup.
Or to a leader who threatens the freedom of the press.
Or to someone who is single-handedly trying to reverse the scant progress that has been made in the fight against global warming.
In other words, the US president is against the kinds of things that have won individuals and organizations Nobel Peace Prizes in the past.
And, even though Trump deserves praise for the deal between Israel and Hamas, giving him the award would render it meaningless.
