Donald Trump on Tuesday ordered a blockade of "sanctioned oil tankers" coming from and going to Venezuela.

With a not-so-subtle reminder that the United States military has surrounded Venezuela with the “largest armada ever assembled in the history of South America,” Donald Trump, the self-proclaimed president of peace, on Tuesday issued a stark warning to the regime of Nicolás Maduro: Do what we want, or else!
Now, even if the Venezuelan president wanted to comply with that demand, it is a bit unclear what exactly it is that Trump, who frequently laments that he has not won the Nobel Peace Prize, wants, and what he is threatening.
“[The buildup of American forces] will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before,” the US president wrote in a social media post.“Until such time as they return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us.”
While Trump, who earlier this month won the inaugural peace prize of soccer’s governing body, FIFA, has used Venezuela’s role in shipping drugs to the United States as the reason for targeting the Maduro regime, he is saying the quiet part out loud in this post, which is that this is as much about Venezuela’s vast oil reserves as anything else.
If the US took control of them, it is possible that gas prices and transportation costs in the US could drop, which would ease the affordability crisis that Trump denies exists and that Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday tried to blame on the previous administration.
“The illegitimate Maduro Regime is using Oil from these stolen Oil Fields to finance themselves, Drug Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Murder, and Kidnapping,” Trump added. “For the theft of our Assets, and many other reasons, including Terrorism, Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking, the Venezuelan Regime has been designated a FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.”
He is certainly not wrong about Maduro, a fellow authoritarian who stole last year’s election to remain in power.
As for everything else… well, that’s just Trump being Trump.
Venezuela is not on this State Department list of state sponsors of terrorism, and countries are usually not designated as “foreign terrorist organizations.”
It’s also not clear which stolen land or oil he is referring to.
Still, he is using this (likely imaginary) designation and this (almost certainly imaginary) land grab as a justification to order a “A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela.”
It’s also unclear which tankers he considers to be sanctioned.
What is clear, however, is that he is trying to pressure Maduro to do… something.
“America will not allow Criminals, Terrorists, or other Countries, to rob, threaten, or harm our Nation and, likewise, will not allow a Hostile Regime to take our Oil, Land, or any other Assets, all of which must be returned to the United States, IMMEDIATELY,” said Trump, who claims to have stopped eight wars this year, of which most weren’t actual wars and/or didn’t actually end.
