Ed Martin is likely the worst among all of Donald Trump’s terrible nominees. The American people deserve to learn more about him... and who the Republican senators are who would support him.

If you don’t know who Ed Martin is, then you are probably not a January 6 insurrectionist. If you were, then you might have run into him. Martin, who is currently the interim US attorney for the District of Columbia, was there that day, compared it to Mardi Gras, and said it was about “love, faith and joy.”

While he did not storm the Capitol together with his “Stop the Steal” brethren, Martin did plenty for the cause afterwards: He raised money for those facing trial, defended some of them in court, and, in his current position, punished those who prosecuted them.

And that’s just one part of what makes him uniquely unqualified to serve as US attorney in general, and US attorney in Washington, DC, in particular.

There are plenty of others, but it would take too long to list them all, which is why we refer you to the work of others.

Or you can just Google “Ed Martin Nazi.”

Or you can do none of those things and simply believe us that, among the long list of personnel choices Trump has made, Ed Martin is the worst, which is quite a distinction in light of the caliber of person the president has nominated.

It’s tough to explain how ill-suited he is for the position. It’s like putting cancer in charge of the National Institutes of Health.

However, because he is as loyal as he is unqualified, Trump wants Martin, who has been serving as US attorney in DC on an interim basis, to fill the position permanently.

That requires Senate confirmation, which puts Republicans in a tough spot… at least those who still have a conscience and a spine.

They can rubber stamp yet another terrible candidate or take a stand and oppose Trump for once.

Fortunately for them, time is running out.

By law, Martin can only stay in his temporary position for 120 days before having to make way for somebody else, and that deadline is May 20th. This allows Republicans to choose Option C: do nothing and blame the Democrats, who have been trying to delay the process and are calling for a confirmation hearing (which is a rare step for a US attorney).

From the perspective of GOP leaders, that is much more preferable, but we think it’s a shame.

We think the American people deserve to learn all about Ed Martin… and then deserve to see which senators believe that he is fit to serve as US attorney in Washington, DC, of all places.

If they got that opportunity, they would likely be appalled by any senator who votes to confirm him… unless they are supporters of the January 6 insurrection, of course.
