Sometimes, when a major development in politics looms, journalists pre-write two drafts of the same story to be able to file something quickly by simply adding whatever the big news is at the top of the article. For example, in the case of Donald Trump’s New York trial, the reporter would write one “Trump Convicted!” and one “Trump Acquitted!” draft, and then file one and discard the other (this example also serves as a reminder that the US president is a convicted felon).
It’s kind of like those “choose your own adventure stories” of yesteryears.
In any case, the big debate in Washington this week was whether enough Senate Democrats would join Republicans in passing a partisan continuing resolution (CR) that gives Donald Trump and Elon Musk everything they want while giving Democrats nothing… well, apart from the knowledge that they once again folded.
We now seem to have an answer after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced on Thursday that he would be complicit in the GOP’s plans instead of putting up a fight.
Below is our story on his proclamation as well as the version of what could have been.
In announcing that he would forcefully reject support a temporary funding measure that Republicans hashed out on their own to give Donald Trump and Elon Musk the time and tools they need to permanently destroy the US government and harm tens of millions of Americans (and even more people across the globe), a defiant defeated Senate Minority Leader on Thursday vowed to use surrender what little power congressional Democrats have left, and thereby emboldened betrayed the party’s base.
“While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on the Senate floor. “For sure, the Republican bill is a terrible option. It is not a clean CR, it is deeply partisan. It doesn’t address far too many of this country’s needs, but I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option.”
In announcing his vociferous opposition spineless support to for the GOP’s spending bill, Schumer signaled to Democrats who are on the fence as to how to vote that they should also stand up and fight for what they believe is the right thing to do in the face of Trump’s tyranny and years of Republican lies and deceit capitulate.
In doing so, he virtually guaranteed that enthusiastic angry members of the burgeoning betrayed anti-Trump/Musk resistance movement will support oppose combative pathetic Democratic incumbents in future primaries.
Nice job, Chuck!
