As a child I grew up in these areas.  As a teenager I returned and got to see some of this firsthand.  This is old and new and old  news on how coal companies have exploited the environment and people of the Appalachian mountains.   Go to Google Earth and look at the brown paches in the beautiful green carpet of life in soutern W.Va.  Usually it is just one mountain away from the main roads population centers to keep it hidden.  The people who live there know where it is and live a life of Catch 22.  They need the jobs but don’t need the slow death they’re these energy companies provide them.

There is no democracy, only demockery.  It sounds like democracy, but always allows the bad guys to win.
