Outside the Box Video Series: The Century of the Self
by Christian Stork
WhoWhatWhy readers have weighed in, and think The Century of Self is “nothing short of magnificent”; a classic documentary series that “every public school and college should use in their curriculum and for discussion.” We thought it was so important that we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it.

WHO

The Killing of Osama bin Laden
Investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh dropped another bombshell onto the corridors of power. This time he attacked the official account of the Seal Team Six raid that killed Osama bin Laden which, according to the Pulitzer-winning Hersh, could’ve been “written by Lewis Carroll.” Hersh questions nearly every part of the narrative… that the US acted alone, that bin Laden was hiding in plain sight, that bin Laden was “tracked down” by US intelligence rather than, essentially, turned over for a substantial reward and that the CIA’s fake vaccination program was linked to the raid on bin Laden’s compound. The White House and the media mouthpieces who swallowed the story are pushing back hard… with the Blitzer Bunch at CNN leading the charge.

The Prize For The Most Racist Interview Of A 2016 Candidate Goes To Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin
The political media is buzzing about a “cringe-worthy”” interview with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) by Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin. The ubiquitous Halperin pressed Cruz on the veracity of his Cuban ethnicity, going so far as to request Cruz say something in Spanish, reveal his favorite Cuban food and identify his favorite Cuban singer. Halperin’s sad attempt at gotcha journalism has done something that seemed inconceivable… it made Cruz a sympathetic figure.

Defense Dept. Pays for Patriotic Displays at NFL Games
What’s more “American” than football or “supporting the troops”? That’s easy. It’s the recent trend of over-the-top celebrations of military… at football games! Seems like a match made in heaven, right? But it isn’t. According to a new report, it’s a match made by the Pentagon and it is greased with millions of dollars. Yup, the American taxpayer is footing the bill for all those solemn celebrations of the military by the NFL. And that’s the most “American” thing of all.

WHAT

Top 50 US Hoarders Sit on $1tn in Cash
If you thought Hoarders was just a bad reality show, you ain’t seen nothing yet… like the half-a-trillion dollars being “hoarded” by just FIVE companies in “overseas cash piles.” Apple, Microsoft, Google, Pfizer and Cisco lead the list of corporations that avoid US taxes by stashing $1.73 trillion in overseas accounts. It’s made possible by the persistence of insanely low interest rates which—along with years of quantitative easing by the Fed—is tantamount to giving out free play money to big business. It means corporations can preserve those offshore cash reserves rather than dipping into them to make investments here in the US.

WHY

Why Is That Cop’s Finger in Your Butt?
This is not a joke. The problem of warrantless body cavity searches has become such an issue that the Texas House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill requiring a warrant before cops can start poking around your private parts. It’s just another excess of the War on Drugs, which made this type of intrusive search acceptable… even if only in the pursuit of non-violent drug offenders during a traffic stop.

Egypt’s Animal Mummy ‘Scandal’ Revealed
A scanning project at Manchester Museum and the University of Manchester discovered that ancient Egypt’s animal mummification industry was not all it was cracked up to be. X-rays and CT scans of 800 mummified bodies found that one-third had animal remains, one-third had some parts and the remaining one-third had nothing inside. It looks like empty promises are as old as civilization.
