According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Republican reconciliation bill (called “big, beautiful bill” by Donald Trump) would eliminate Medicaid coverage for 8.6 million Americans by 2034. The actual impact may be even higher, with more than 13 million current recipients potentially losing coverage. These cuts would save $715 billion, which would be directed toward tax breaks for wealthy Americans.

Republicans, including Rep. Brett Guthrie (KY), claim the bill “preserves and strengthens Medicaid” through work requirements, while Democrats like Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ) argue Republicans are “cutting people’s health care and using that money to give tax breaks to billionaires” rather than eliminating waste as claimed.
