Dominica on Track to Become the World’s First ‘Hurricane-Proof’ Country (Mili)

From National Geographic: “Five days after [2015’s Hurrican Erika] hit, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit addressed the United Nations General Assembly. ‘I come to you straight from the front line of the war on climate change,’ Skerrit said in his address. ‘In the past, we would prepare for one heavy storm a year. Now, thousands of storms form on a breeze in the mid-Atlantic and line up to pound us with maximum force and fury.’ Skerrit’s impassioned speech was a plea for the funds to make Dominica into the world’s first fully climate resilient nation. It requires not replacing what was lost, but building for a future where climate change all but guarantees a storm of Maria’s scale will strike again. Dominica is striving to construct not only hurricane-proof buildings but also a diverse economy.”

Climate Change May Be Blowing Up Arms Depots (Gerry)

The author writes, “More intense heat waves can destabilize the components of munitions, particularly where explosives are not properly stored.”

Climate Change Imperils 60% of US Superfund Sites (Chris)

From Courthouse News: “GAO investigators looked at 1,571 Superfund sites, contaminated locations that, according to the EPA website, exist nationally due to hazardous waste being dumped, left out in the open or otherwise improperly managed. That number does not include Superfund sites owned by the Defense Department and other federal agencies. At least 945 of them are in areas that scientists have identified as at greater risk of floods, storm surge from major hurricanes, wildfires or sea-level rise of 3 feet or more, the GAO says.”

Only 1.4% of ‘Free College’ Spending Would Go to Children of the Super-Rich (Chris)

The author writes, “The entire cost of free college will be paid for by the rich, whether it’s Bernie Sanders’s financial transaction tax or Elizabeth Warren’s wealth tax or many other options. It is true that the rich will recoup 1.4 percent of that, but that seems like a worthwhile tradeoff.”

California Newspaper That’s Existed Since Before the Civil War to Shut Down (Reader Steve)

The author writes, “Throughout its history, the Martinez News-Gazette has written about Civil War battles, the sinking of the Titanic, the Great Depression and the Kennedy assassination, to name a few. More recently, it has been the only media outlet consistently covering this city of roughly 38,000. And now, Contra Costa County’s oldest newspaper is reaching its abrupt end, after a lifespan that has covered much of the United States’ history.”
