Massive Barge Sunk Off Jersey Shore To Create Paradise for Fish (Maria)
The author writes, “A 200-foot barge has become the latest addition to the Little Egg Inlet Reef, the same spot where artificial reef balls were added last year. The barge, identified as No. 199, was sponsored by the Beach Haven Charter Boat Association and their Junior Mate Program…The sunken barge is expected to become home to more than 150 marine organisms.”
Trump-Putin Meeting Details Were Left in a Hotel Printer in Alaska (Sean)
From Forbes: “Three guests at Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage, Alaska, located near the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson where Putin and Trump convened, found eight pages that appeared to be produced by State Department officials in one of the hotel’s public printers…The first page detailed the sequence of meetings between Russian and US officials on Friday, including the names of rooms inside the Anchorage base, and that Trump planned to give Putin an ‘American Bald Eagle Desk Statue.’ Other pages featured the names and phone numbers of three US government staff members, the names of US and Russian state leaders and their phonetic pronunciations, while pages six and seven described how lunch—held in ‘honor of his excellency Vladimir Putin’—would be served at the summit.”
DHS’s Neo-Nazi Memes Show the Agency for What It Is (Reader Jim)
The author writes, “As it begins building the largest law enforcement agency in the country, the Department of Homeland Security has lately turned to social media to recruit immigration enforcement officers. These posts have been characterized as ‘mean memes,’ or as another sign of the Trump regime’s penchant for ‘kitsch,’ but one particularly egregious example posted Monday shows quite clearly how meanness and kitsch are ideal vehicles for neo-Nazi messaging.”
ICE’s Recruitment Drive Just Hit a Disgusting New Low (Dana)
From The New Republic: “What’s most alarming is the DHS’s caption. They write, ‘Which way, American Man?’ a direct reference to the book ‘Which Way, Western Man?’ written by infamous white supremacist William Gayley Simpson and published by neo-Nazi and National Alliance founder William Luther Pierce. Simpson’s book is deeply racist and antisemitic, containing chapters titled ‘The Necessity of Eugenics,’ ‘The Everlasting Truth About Race,’ and ‘The Doctrine of the Thoroughbred,’ among others.”
WA State Employee, Son Released by Ice After Three-Week Detention (Reader Steve)
The author writes, “New Zealander Sarah Shaw and her son were detained by ICE at the Canadian border last month after she dropped off her two eldest children at Vancouver International Airport. Shaw, an employee at the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families, works at Echo Glen Children’s Center, a medium/maximum security juvenile rehabilitation facility in Snoqualmie…Shaw holds a ‘combo card,’ a temporary immigration document that authorized her to work in the US. The combo card can also function as a travel document, but Shaw didn’t realize that part of the card was no longer valid…Only the work authorization part had been recently renewed. It should have been a simple issue to fix, but instead it led to Shaw’s detainment at the border.”
