In a First, California City Overwhelmingly Votes To Ban Datacenters (Maria)
The author writes, “Residents in Monterey Park, California, on Tuesday became the first in the country to vote to permanently ban datacenters, and early results indicate a resounding victory for the prohibition. While many cities and counties have already passed temporary or indefinite moratoriums via their local governments, Monterey Park would be the first to do so through a ballot initiative.”
Trump Administration Has Separated Dozens of Children From Their Parents for a Second Time (Reader Steve)
From the Associated Press: “Eight years after President Donald Trump’s forcible border separations came to an official halt following global outrage, an Associated Press investigation has found that the government has re-separated dozens of children from their families, despite a landmark legal settlement meant to keep them together. Some of their parents have been locked in immigration detention facilities for months, others deported back to their home countries after being taken from their families once again. In some cases, immigration officials conducting interior arrests deported people despite discovering they were legally off limits for removal, according to emails obtained by AP.”
‘We Are Being Made to Look Like Fools’: How Trump Is Weaponizing World Cup Visas (Dana)
From Mother Jones: “The FIFA Men’s World Cup starts next week — and some players still don’t know whether they’ll be able to travel to their matches. On Wednesday, Switzerland’s main goalscorer, Breel Embolo, applied for a visa at the US embassy in the country’s capital after US officials blocked him from boarding a flight with his teammates to their World Cup training camp in San Diego the day before. The Swiss soccer federation stated that the US has been reviewing Embolo’s criminal conviction after a 2018 altercation in Basel, Switzerland. … Meanwhile, the men’s national team of South Africa, a frequent target of the Trump administration over ‘white genocide’ claims, had to delay their Saturday flight from Johannesburg to Mexico City because at least 20 people in their traveling group — mainly players — were still trying to get the US embassy in that country to process their visas.”
Trump Goon Melts Down Over Trump’s Reflecting Pool Leaks (Sean)
The author writes, “Interior Secretary Doug Burgum lashed out at claims that the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial was already leaking as the Trump administration scrambled to finish the $13.1 million renovations in time for the Fourth of July. The massive pool spanning more than 2,000 feet has had leaks for decades. President Donald Trump has vowed to fix it while bragging about other pools he’s built. But according to documents reviewed by the New York Times, the contractor’s effort to seal the gaps failed in two trials earlier this month, leaving the Park Service and the company rushing to come up with a fix.”
Scientists Warn That Current Vitamin B12 Guidelines May Be Putting Your Brain at Risk (Mili)
The author writes, “Getting enough vitamin B12 to meet current health guidelines may not actually be enough to protect the aging brain. Researchers at UC San Francisco found that older adults with “normal” but lower levels of active B12 showed signs of slower thinking, delayed visual processing, and more damage to the brain’s white matter — the communication highways that help different brain regions work together.”
