Climate Change Activists Urge Los Angeles Not to Build New Gas Plant in Utah (Reader Steve)
The author writes, “Dozens of environmental groups and neighborhood councils are urging Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti not to move forward with plans to build an $865-million gas-fired power plant in Utah, saying the investment is inconsistent with calls to stem the global climate crisis by phasing out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, and conflicts with Garcetti’s own climate agenda. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power board of commissioners, activists pressed city officials to replace Intermountain Power Plant — a coal plant the utility operates just outside Delta, Utah — with climate-friendly power sources such as wind, solar and battery storage, as well as energy efficiency measures back home.”

On Its 50-Year Anniversary, A Look Back on the Occupation of Alcatraz (Chris)
From SFist: “November 20th, 1969 was a day of cultural reckoning. Around 2 a.m. that Thursday evening, 78 individuals — a diverse community, representing 20 tribal groups — stepped off their two maritime vessels, loaded with supplies, and onto the landing dock of the defunct federal prison, for what would become a 19-month occupation of the 22-acre islet.”
Anal Cancer Rates Have Risen Dramatically Among Americans (Mili)
The author writes, “Rates of new anal cancer diagnoses and deaths related to human papillomavirus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted infection, have increased dramatically over the last 15 years, according to researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). The results of their study were published in the November issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study was the first to compare and categorize contemporary national trends in incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, a type of anal cancer caused by HPV, by stage at diagnosis, year of birth, and mortality. It found that anal cancer diagnoses, particularly advanced stage disease, and anal cancer mortality rates had more than doubled for people in their 50s and 60s.”
Hitler’s Birthplace in Austria to Become a Police Station (Reader Jim)
The author writes, “With the move, announced by the interior minister on Tuesday, the Austrian authorities hope to send a clear message to supporters of far-right extremism that the three-story building in downtown Braunau am Inn, near Austria’s border with Germany, will not be a shrine to Hitler.”
