Fiery Meteorite That Punched Hole in Georgia Home’s Roof Is Older Than Earth (Maria)
The author writes, “A meteorite that punched a hole in a Georgia homeowner’s roof after blazing across the sky in a fiery streak is older than the Earth itself, according to a scientist who examined fragments of the space rock. People in several Southern states reported seeing the mysterious fireball in broad daylight on June 26 as it hurtled toward the ground faster than the speed of sound… Examining the fragments under microscopes, [University of Georgia planetary geologist Scott] Harris concluded the meteorite formed 4.56 billion years ago. That is roughly 20 million years older than the Earth.”
Israel Kills Five Al Jazeera Staff in Gaza (Sean)
From Al Jazeera: “The Israeli military confirmed that it deliberately killed Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif and four other staff after it hit their tent at the entrance of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The journalists, who had been threatened for months, are now among the more than 230 media workers who have been killed by Israeli weapons since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza. The Israeli army also killed more Palestinians in bombings across the besieged enclave, as it allowed more limited airdrops of aid to maintain appearances of delivering food to the starving population.”
Standing up to ICE Is a Moral Imperative (Dana)
The author writes, “Watching this harm inflicted on our neighbors, many of us feel powerless, But, in fact, there is a pathway that allows us to take action and make a difference for immigrants today. ICE’s dependence on local cooperation gives communities leverage to disrupt these operations. Most county sheriffs are elected by voters to serve as chief law enforcement officers in counties across the land. They run jails, serve warrants, and patrol unincorporated areas. But, as locally elected officials, they answer directly to voters and in many cases can control whether their jails cooperate with ICE. They can refuse to cooperate. And we the people can insist that they not participate in these raids and detentions.”
Trump Orders Homeless He Passed en Route to Golf Course To Leave Washington DC (Reader Jim)
From The Guardian: “In a social media post on Sunday, Donald Trump has demanded homeless residents of Washington DC leave the country’s capital or face eviction, and again promised to use federal officers to jail criminals, even though violent crime in the city was at a 30-year low when he took office in January. ‘The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform Sunday morning, shortly after being driven from the White House to his golf club in Virginia.”
Whitmer Told Trump in Private That Michigan Auto Jobs Depend on a Tariff Change of Course (Reader Steve)
The author writes, “Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met privately in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump to make a case he did not want to hear: The automotive industry he said he wants to save was being hurt by his tariffs…Whitmer’s strategy for dealing with Trump highlights the conundrum for her and other Democratic leaders as they try to protect the interests of their states while voicing their opposition to his agenda. It’s a dynamic that Whitmer has navigated much differently from many other Democratic governors.”
The Gen Z Divide That Could Decide the Next Election (Laryn)
From Vox: “The future of American politics might be decided by whether young voters get most of their news through TikTok…As opposed to active news consumers — who are seeking out information, want to keep up with current events, and are more engaged with politics — passive news consumers encounter things in passing while scanning headlines on social media apps and video feeds or see and hear current events discussed by influencers on TikTok or their weekly podcasts. Politics might not be central to their lives. They might not be frequent voters. And so, they don’t go out of their way to keep up with the latest developments.”
