For years the media has been blaming MAGA for all the ills of Trumpism. That is a mistake.

As we survey the damage being done by the incoming Trump administration to the quality of life for all people across the nation, it is important that we place responsibility where it belongs, on the Republican Party.
Donald Trump has issued dozens of executive orders that are already wreaking havoc throughout the land. I personally know two people who have been affected. One lost a job offer and one has been hit with a major delay in receiving veterans benefits.
This week the US Senate approved the confirmation of Pete Hegseth, 51 to 50. Vice President JD Vance broke the tie. Only three Republicans voted against Hegseth, an obviously unqualified candidate for secretary of defense.
Many speculate that shoving Hegseth down the throats of Senate Republicans is a power play by Trump to humiliate the senators and to make them realize that they must support Trump 100 percent or Elon Musk will attack them with his piles of endless cash. All he has to do is threaten a primary and the politician falls into line; see, e.g., Joni Ernst. Never mind the safety and security of the United States of America. Hand over the largest and most complex government department to a low-ranking veteran with a history of alcoholism, who never successfully ran a large, complex organization.
When the Republican Party twice had the opportunity to impeach and convict Trump, they put party over country and allowed this criminal president to get away scot-free. They all knew that Trump had committed impeachable acts, but ignored the facts in search of power.
If you are one of the not-crazy, not-extremist, not Christian nationalist, traditional Republicans, you are increasingly on the outs with your own party. It may be time for you to realize that this isn’t your dad’s Republican Party. The MAGA movement has taken over the party. It’s a scary place to be now.
Imagine all of the times people have referred to MAGA over the years instead of identifying the actors as Republicans. Trump specializes in repeating lies so often that eventually people can’t tell lies from truth. By constantly calling bad actors MAGA instead of Republicans, we fail to drive home the message that it’s the Republican Party that is permitting all of this insanity.
