JD Vance has proven to be a singularly out-of-touch tech-bro willing to prostrate himself before his dear leader in order to jump in the line of succession should the Republicans retake the White House. That would give Vance’s backers the ultimate inside man. Vance rode a wave of Peter Thiel cash into his Senate seat, which positioned him to join the Trump ticket.
Now Vance is showing that he completely lacks a conscience. He was hired to serve the citizens of Ohio, but instead he is belittling and endangering his constituents in Springfield by claiming legal Haitian immigrants, trying to participate in the American dream, are eating cats, dogs, geese, ducks, and whatever. He is blaming them for any number of made-up “crimes.”
It is all dangerous nonsense, much like the themes of the entire Trump/Vance campaign. The town is suffering from bomb threats, Proud Boy invasions, and other major disruptions. Not only is Vance spewing hate that is manifesting real harm, but he then complains and whines when people call him out about it.
Using racist dog whistles to demonize immigrants is as old as time. Here is an example from 1869.
Seth Meyers and his Late Night writers compiled clips showcasing Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric. “Seth takes a closer look at Donald Trump and JD Vance doubling down on racist lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield while claiming that Democrats are the ones who have to tone down their rhetoric.”
