Trump delivered his thanks to John Roberts with an “I got away with it” grin.

During his entrance to the House chamber before delivering his not quite a State of the Union address, President Donald Trump leaned into Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and said, “Thank you again. Thank you again. I won’t forget.”
Trump thinks that Roberts has his back because Roberts endowed the president with absolute immunity. That is most likely because the chief justice believes in the unitary executive theory that was cooked up in the back rooms of the Federalist Society.
Under this theory the president can do anything he wants because that is how Roberts thinks he can get his own agenda accomplished. Roberts also seems to hold no respect for the Reconstruction Amendments — the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.
His agenda has always been to reverse the changes brought on by passage of the Civil Rights Act and to resegregate America. Trump is a convenient tool for achieving these goals. Once they are achieved, if Trump’s law-breaking catches up to him yet again, it’s fair to ask whether Roberts will still have Trump’s back — or will he let the president, or ex-president, twist in the wind?
You can witness the exchange here.
