The Detroit Economic Club hosted a speech by Donald Trump on October 10. The former president took the occasion to lecture the crowd about threats to our democratic system: “You see, that’s the real threat to the democracy, stupid people. That’s the threat, our biggest threat to democracy is stupid people.”
Trump depends on his supporters being stupid, willfully ignorant, or just plain complicit. They swallow all of his lies or knowingly enjoy being in on the lie. Trump’s hurricanes of falsehoods are destroying the fabric of American society. Once there is no truth, there is no basis for common ground.
