Your Browser’s Password Manager Is Better Than Ever. You Still Shouldn’t Use It. (Maria)
The author writes, “Your browser wants to manage your passwords. Maybe it’s to make your browsing experience more seamless in the hotly competitive browser wars, or maybe it’s a response to the popularity of password managers. Regardless of the reason, you’ve undoubtedly seen hundreds of pop-ups offering to save your credentials as you browse online. … The problem isn’t encryption — it’s putting all your eggs in one basket.”
National Guard Deployments in DC and Portland, OR, Are Focus of Court Hearings (Reader Steve)
The authors write, “No National Guard troops are expected to be deployed in Portland, Oregon, for at least several days, after a temporary federal appeals court decision Friday. Now, in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year, the Fair Access to Insurance Requirements (FAIR) Plan is seeking approval from the state for an average 36% rate hike, which would further squeeze homeowners who have no other options for coverage. Insurance experts say it’s a national warning sign, as the effects of climate change cause private insurance companies to pull back on coverage in disaster-prone areas, leaving states and their residents to assume more of the risk.”
Mosquitoes Found in Iceland for the First Time (Sean)
From Yale Environment 360: “Iceland, one of the last places on Earth to be free of mosquitoes, recorded its first sighting this month. Scientists say warming is making the country more hospitable to the insects. With its plentiful ponds and marshes, Iceland is, in many ways, highly suitable for mosquitoes. Though the island is frigid for most of the year, it is one of the fastest-warming regions on the planet, making it increasingly welcoming to mosquitoes.”
Sugar-Rationed Babies Grow Up to Be Healthier Adults (Mili)
The author writes, “Cardiovascular outcomes in adulthood tracked with limits on sugar exposure from the womb through the toddler years, a study found. Among U.K. Biobank participants, those who had been exposed in utero and in the first 1-2 years of life to World War II-era sugar rationing had statistically significantly lower cardiovascular risks after age 40 years compared with individuals never exposed to sugar rationing.”
