    Only a third the cost of running the Boston system comes from the farebox, NYC is over 50%. Most big systems are in between.

    Mass transit, like public streets, is already heavily subsidized… as they should be and have been for 400 years in North America. Congrats to KC but hardly socialism.

    In the USSR, standard fare was a tiny plastic 3 kopek coin, btw, not free.
