Is the Government Holding Back Crucial Documents?

Reading Time: 8 minutes

Next year will be a half-century since the death of JFK. And the Obama Administration thinks we need to keep secret the records on the matter….a little longer yet.

Believe it or not, more than 50,000 pages of JFK assassination-related documents are being withheld in full. And an untold number of documents have been partially withheld, or released with everything interesting blacked out. But why?

Since the government and the big media keep telling us there was no conspiracy, and that it was all Lee Harvey Oswald acting on his own, why continue to keep the wraps on?

We don’t have an answer, but in understanding this and any number of other mysteries, we can begin looking for patterns in the way the administration handles information policy.

We Want to Hear From You (But That’s It—We Just Want to Hear From You)

Earlier this year, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) asked, on its online Open Government Forum, for suggestions from the public about what it could do to create greater transparency. The #1 most popular idea? Get those Kennedy records out—before Nov. 22, 2013, the fiftieth anniversary of the Dallas tragedy.

But instead of dealing honestly with this matter, the feds have resorted to disinformation. In an interview with the Boston Globe, the Archivist of the United States claimed that at two public forums held on open records, the most public comments came from people interested either in the JFK assassination or….in UFOs.

Except for one thing: James Lesar, an attorney and co-founder of the Assassination Archives and Research Center (AARC), a DC-based nonprofit that has fought a long and valiant fight on behalf of the public interest in disclosure, attended both of those forums and says that as he recalls there were no people there asking about UFOs, or that at most it was of negligible interest. In fact, a look at NARA’s online idea forum (now closed) showed no UFO proposals or comments.

So, what’s with claiming otherwise? One could be excused for seeing in the Archivist’s statement a deliberate, and unworthy, attempt to smear the legitimacy of JFK inquiries by trying to make them appear “kooky.” (Not to judge the merits of the idea that there could be life elsewhere in the Universe, but the term “UFO conspiracist” is a well-worn dysphemism.)

Here’s what actually happened at the NARA forums.

The first was held in 2010. The assistant archivist, Michael Kurtz, said that withheld JFK assassination records would be processed, along with other documents, for declassification—and that the process should be completed by the end of 2013.

But by 2011, Kurtz, who had been at NARA for decades, had retired. At the 2011 forum, Jim Lesar was told that JFK assassination records are not part of the declassification process. Hence, they will not be reviewed for release.

Huh? What Happened

For some perspective, meet Sheryl Shenberger. She’s the head of the Archives’ National Declassification Center. What would you guess Sheryl’s professional background would be? Library of Congress? Academic research? Nope. Before NDC, Sheryl worked for….the Central Intelligence Agency.

The most logical and reasonable explanation for this is that the Obama administration placed an ex-spook in charge of declassification because this would induce her old colleagues in Langley to cooperate. (Which of course raises the question of whether, in a real democracy, you would want to have a bunch of people secretly deciding to do whatever they wanted with 50-year-old documents pertaining to a supposed loony loner who whacked a president.)

Frustrated by the administration’s foot-dragging on JFK, AARC sent a letter urging the government to get off its duff. One signer was G. Robert Blakey, who served as a Chief Counsel to the House Select Committee on Assassinations (which in its 1978 final report said that, um…it looks like an organized conspiracy was responsible for JFK’s death.)

ARRC’s letter was dated January 20, 2012. According to Lesar, there has still been no reply—though NARA says it is working on it.

Release of the remaining documents, under the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, can be postponed until October 26, 2017. Not so bad, you say? Actually, the Act further states that even in 2017, the president may decide to drag this on further, by withholding records indefinitely.

Records activists expect the CIA to petition for just such a decision.  Any bets on President Hillary or President Mitt—or, quite possibly, President Jeb Bush, doing the right thing? With all the secrets Jeb’s father has to hide?

Playing Games with Numbers

One of the problems is that we’re being asked to trust these folks at all. Even the number of documents being withheld—50,000—is a guess. At the 2010 public forum, Asst. Archivist Kurtz said that only about one percent of the five million pages had been withheld. Now the government is likely to say the number is even smaller. But think about it: what would they withhold, except the stuff that really tells us something important? So whether it is 50,000 or 500 documents, it appears that government officials are hiding something, and they’re not about to give it up.

One of the many wonderful spook tricks is to designate files as “Not Believed Relevant.” Among those so designated when the House Assassinations Committee investigated in the 1970s, we later learned, were files on the Soviet defector Yuri Nosenko. He had claimed to have been in charge of the KGB’s Oswald files; and on the Cuban Revolutionary Council, a CIA front group set up by the ubiquitous master planner E. Howard Hunt that was connected in multiple ways to the Oswald story.

“Not Believed Relevant”? We’ll take one of each of those documents, please.

Amazingly, the CIA under George W. Bush may turn out to be more compliant than Obama’s “open government” advocates. In 2004, on Bush’s watch, the Agency voluntarily agreed to accelerate the release of postponed JFK assassination documents, and did indeed release some early.

By contrast, in the spring of 2012, three DC attorneys with long experience in litigating Freedom of Information cases expressed their disappointment with Obama in an opinion piece. They noted that the Department of Justice under Eric Holder seems willing to go to bat for any and every agency and department that wants to withhold information.

Open Government Plans….So Where’s the Open Government?

On his first day in office, President Obama signed a government-wide directive–widely reported by the media—establishing a whole new level of commitment to openness and transparency. The administration has made some real strides. But arguably not on the most sensitive—and hence most important—matters.

On April 9, federal agencies were supposed to post updates to their Open Government Plans, this according to Cass Sunstein, administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, writing on the White House blog. Some agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, did so. But others, such as the Department of Labor, did not—and still have not. NARA is one of those that has not complied.

As the expression goes, sunshine is the best disinfectant. Opening up the nooks and crannies of government to public view was supposed to aid the process of discovering and rooting out the rot. This would, we were assured, help return Washington to the people. Obama selected Sunstein, a Harvard professor and old friend, to oversee this effort.

Not long ago, when I asked to discuss this with Sunstein, I was told he was “not available” for interviews.

Here’s the exchange:

Mr. Sunstein, wonder if I might be able to do a phone interview with you about Open Records policy?

Unfortunately, Administrator Sunstein is unavailable for an interview.  That said, you might try the Archivist of the United States at NARA?  Best of luck!

Is he generally unavailable for interviews? What is the policy on that? Seems relevant given that this is about open government.

No, he’s not generally unavailable—but the Archivist is intimately involved in one of our big open government initiatives (records modernization), so he’s just a particularly good person to speak to on this.

So the person in charge of the overall governmental effort on open records wants me to talk to the person running one of the agencies that is….having difficulties complying with the spirit if not letter of Obama’s announcement.

No Mr. Sunshine, That Mr. Sunstein

Actually, Sunstein has good reason to lay low. Watch this slightly raw video of someone confronting him about a paper he wrote a few years ago. In it, he actually advocated “cognitive infiltration” of groups that espouse alternative views on controversial issues like the events of Sept. 11, i. e, conspiracy theories.

Here’s a quote from Sunstein’s paper:

[W]e suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.

Sunstein is a sort of caricature of everything people don’t like and don’t trust about government. The fact that he’s in charge of “open government” speaks volumes.

Apparently not a great enthusiast for the Freedom of Information Act, Sunstein has said that judges are not qualified to second-guess executive branch decisions on what the public should or should not be told.

In light of this record, it’s useful to consider Sunstein’s broader mandate: to make government more efficient and accountable. Releasing records involves, in part, cutting red tape. Another aspect of cutting red tape is getting rid of bureaucracy. And that’s where things get even more interesting. Under cover of making government more accountable, Sunstein gets to push for elimination of regulations that corporations find onerous. Here’s a Washington Post article on Sunstein holding up (for more than a year) food safety legislation that the industry doesn’t like.

What’s going on here? Why the seeming shift away from Obama’s initial commitment to openness? One attorney involved with these matters says he suspects this may be traceable to Obama’s order, shortly after he took office, to release many of the so-called “torture memos.” The President seemed taken aback by vociferous public demands that he prosecute the torturers—a perilous policy due to internal resistance—and quickly shifted to favoring the intelligence community and restricting disclosure. As the attorney points out, the broader concept—that transparency leads to public awareness which in turn leads to demands for political changes—certainly does not sit well with dominant sectors in this country. Obama has hardly distinguished himself for seriously taking on those sectors. Maybe because he doesn’t want to, maybe because…he can’t. (For more on this, see our 2010 piece, “What Obama is Up Against.”)

NARA is now saying that the White House gave “small agencies” (meaning NARA) a June deadline for publishing its revised open government plan. But no White House postings support that claim. In any case, even if and when NARA becomes more responsive, don’t bet on the government releasing the most valuable JFK-related documents…in your lifetime.

By the way, here’s more on the new head of the Archives’ declassification center: “Ms. Shenberger served as a Branch Chief in the CIA Counter Terrorism Center between 2001 and 2003…” before being assigned declassification work for the Agency.

That’s very interesting—since one gets the sense that the Agency is not eager to release inside dope on the government’s astounding failures relating to one particular date in 2001.

This has probably been said by others but I recommend watching the “A Dark Legacy” documentaries on the subject.

It seems to me that the REAL cause of why JFK was murdered could have been comparatively mundane. USA was in a situation where we were going to have two powerful political dynasties: the Kennedy family, and the Bush family.

Some members in one of these families simply wanted to eliminate the competition.

And in any case, the threat of “anarchy” is not a real reason but an excuse to not release the documents. There are no real reasons to why the documents could not be released. If they are properly released to, for example, impartial researchers, there is a bigger chance that justice is eventually served and most Americans would actually be happy about that.

It’s way past time to release these files. What is being hidden from public consumption? Certainly not what we have been already told for over five decades now.

Mortal Error. Interesting book. Also, JFK: The Smoking Gun on Netflix. Worth a watch. There was a conspiracy, but it was only to cover up the fact that JFK was shot in the head BY ACCIDENT by a Secret Service Agent in the follow up car behind him. No wonder everything is being withheld. Can you imagine this country’s reaction of grief and sorrow at learning this???

Since their version is correct, why don’t they prove it by releasing the official records, and thus the proof? Put all our distrust, skepticism, and curiosity by releasing everything. Cone on big guys, if you’re right and we’re wrong show us!

I would really like to have all of JFK’s records released to the public. We all know there was and still is corruption in the govt and always will be. I really want to know who/why and why someone would do this to one of the most honorable men I knew ( I don’t care about his affairs) I often wonder what this country might have been had he not died. :(

One constant thread I see running through these articles is giving Obama “the benefit of the doubt” whether that is due to the author’s political bias I don’t know. However this stuff isn’t to be looked at through a “political bias prism”. Truth is truth, that is what you have to dig for, regardless of politics, frankly this whole “left-right” thing is facade and charade to keep people distracted and divided. Its really us vs. THEM. Thats it. No Republican, no Democrat, no conservative, no liberal. Is it really hard to imagine that Obama was groomed, and put into place by the very same people who murdered Kennedy? His grandparents had very strong CIA ties and his mother worked for various groups that were funded and directed by the CIA. Is it really that much of a stretch that Obama’s “transparency” promise was just an act. This administration hasn’t been really forthcoming with almost everything as it pertains to secrecy and protecting whistle blowers. People need to learn the whole government is compromised, sure there is good people working in it but they are few and far in between. Labels don’t matter anymore, their just a way to distract you, I’ve been saying this as far back as Clinton. I choose not to view things through a prism of politics, don’t get me wrong I hold strong views but I don’t let them get in the way of critical thinking if the truth has shown otherwise.

As Mr. Baker wrote in “Family of Secrets” (and written nowhere else that I can find) LBJ is on the White House tapes bragging to Senator Richard Russell that he blackmailed Earl Warren into serving on the commission that bears his name.
The leftists in academia and the media are engaged in an horrific cover-up of the crimes of Lyndon Johnson. They can be found in detail in Barr McClellan’s book “Money Blood and Power” and some are mentioned, though merely in passing, in Robert Dalek’s book “Flawed Giant”. Johnson employed a personal assassin who McClellan implicates in the JFK case. After serving time in prison Billy Sol Estes fled the country and wrote of these crimes as well. In the polluted minds of the leftists, All Is Forgiven due to Johnson signing the Civil Rights bill (which he had previously opposed, going back to the Eisenhower administration). This is like forgiving the Nazis for the Holocaust because of the Transfer Agreement they executed with the Zionists.

    • Avatar Moriarty says:

For the record Mr. Tea – those of us who are ACTUALLY on “the left” tend to bristle at the notion that Obama or even LBJ are really “leftists”, at all. In fact, outside of Cuba or Venezuela, I doubt you’d be able to find an actual “leftist”, whom we would recognize as being something other than “cognitive infiltration”, as described above. Real leftists are people whom you’ve likely never even heard of – like William Blum, or James Petras – thanks to the ever reliable efforts of our Corporate Media monopoly.
Right now Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi (I’m guessing that you’d regard them as “leftists”) are busy selling an illegal (under International law – regardless of how Congress votes) attack on Syria.
As I understand it LBJ was Kellogg, Brown and Root’s pocket Senator prior to his ascension, so how leftist does that make him? Barack Obama spent some of the 80’s working in Afghanistan as an intern for a CIA front-group – hardly the credentials of a bonafide leftist.
As for Robert Dalek (“EXTERMINATE – EXTERMINATE!”) he’s a well known believer in the official story of the JFK assassination – who’s been used by the “History” Channel and several other disinformation outlets in the past – to help keep the lid on JFK’s coffin. So he’s probably not the best source to be quoting (whatever the point of doing-so) in a reply on this subject.

  14. Avatar A curious Mind says:

After JFK’s speech about hidden organisations in control from the background it is no wonder he got killed. He might have been the first president to not want to be the puppet. Who wanted to really do what he said when he ran. I think this might be a part of the change so many have when in office. They do not know they are not really in charge. The people who pull the strings are. Presidents last 4-8 years so they probably do not want to give long term info to them. Many work in the same sector for their whole life and watch each change happen. Those are the ones who hold all the strings, they know about more then we ever will.

  15. What I find myself asking as I read the comments here, is what percentage of them are part of a disinformation campaign to discredit your excellent article – thanks, Russ Baker.

I’d like to see an article which explores how to define the frame of questions to ask, how to evaluate and cross-reference information, and how to smell out disinformation.

I’m especially interested in negative space information – if you watch the mainstream media, it’s often what they don’t say which is most interesting and revealing.

More great stuff on the run-up to this monumental anniversary I mark it as the day 10/22/63, democray as I believed in it was destroyed in the US. As Howard Zinn succintly stated “assume the goverment lies”. I was in Vietnam when MLK and RFK were assassinated and don’t have much of a memory of those killings but, as a teenager the JFK thing caused me great anger and pain and change my view of government permanently.

  21. Double PS: Has everyone here filed a FOI- Privacy-Act request for your records from the DOD, FBI, CIA and now the NSA (I’ll wager that the NSA does not have a FOI officer, never expecting people to know that they even exist)? It would also be interesting if all interested persons initiated FOI requests for UFO/U-2 from FBI/CIA/Natn’l Reconnaissance Agency (the one that had an early morning “Plane has crashed into our building” drill on 9/11/2001, thus closing our satellite “eyes in the sky” on that particular morning).
Also, individual inquiries of our telecom carriers for all the records on us, and requests for guided tours of the Narus/”Splitter Box Rooms” that the NSA installed in 2002 in all of our telecom trunk switching facilities. We know the location of  the wiretap room at AT&T’s San Francisco Folsom Street “switching office”. How about in   How about in Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego? That’s AT&T/Worldnet. What about BellSouth, MCI, Sprint, Qwest, Comcast, Cingular, Verizon and all their state entities, holding company entities, etc.? Are there any other carriers? Verizon apparently don’t use the developed-in-Israel, bought by charter Military-Industrial-Legislative-Spy Complex member Boing, Narus STA 6400 (see but instead use another Israeli-developed “deep content mining” (or some such sobriquet) computer/system.

In other words, they’re not interested in “phone records” etc., but rather in the entire contents of the communications.

Of more interest, perhaps, is the Writ of Mandamus, wherein folks take action, in court, against their government employees, to have the court command, or mandate, that they do their job. Supposedly, can’t be used in cases where the non-performing employee (President, AG, FBI, “Justice” department) has any discretion about whether to act.  Seems to me, though, that a Mandamus action would stand against the AG of Massachusetts, which had many illegally sacrificed to the Military-Industrial Complex on 9/11, also against the Manhattan DA, NYC federal prosecutors, NYS Attorney General, and ditto the same officials in Virginia and Pennsylvania. One might think that investigating 2,992 murders (or your state’s aliquot portion of the 2,992) would move away from the “discretionary” and into the realm of mandatory performance under the guidelines of the oaths of office the DAs and AGs and prosecutors took before they could be “seated.”

         Any thoughts?

  22. Meant to note this “Secrets of the CIA” documentary 1:32…

One segment covers the U-2 spy plane development, noting that the CIA actively encouraged reports of UFOs because they masked some of the developmental detritus of trying to hide the presence of multi-ton long-range aircraft, mid-air refueling, low- vs high-altitude testing, etc. So these would be “Known Unknown Flying Objects,” as opposed to really, really Unknown Unknown Flying Objects (in Rumsfeld’s, and others’, rhetorical canon).
Lots and lots of holes (leaving out a heap of British involvement), but a quick primer on the history of our very own #1 (or #2) Global Terrorist Organization, the Curiously Inept Agency. I wonder if it’s possible that American taxpayers could be jailed for funneling money (by paying their taxes) to this global terrorist organization, the aforementioned CIA?

Thank Yahweh, I guess, that we have a robust double standard in the USB.*

    * Jon Stewart tried the “USB, USB” chant in his piece on Curiosity I’s successful landing on Mars–the “geeks’ triumph” as opposed to the “jocks’ triumph(s) at the London games.  And inadvertently(?) reminding me of the Bush Public Appearances Playbook, where “USA, USA” chants were used to drown out dissenters’ chants, Secret Service dudes were used to arrest people with “negative thoughts, as demonstrated by nasty banners, T-shirts, songs, etc.).  But I like USB–Jon showed a pix of the USB ports on a laptop–showing the appropriate geekiness of the chant. But I think it also works as a nice 1%/99% variant, where the “A” list gets nearly everything, and the “B” list, the “other America where the 99% do dwell”, get the husks. And it so scans!  Try “U S B, USB” vs  “Nine-ty-nine-per-cent, Nine Ty Nine Per Cent”.  Three syllabubs vs. five.  Three wins, fingers up (and hands down), imho.

What explanation has the government given for why Kennedy assassination documents need to be secret?  What interests does the United States have today that need protection from secret operations in 1963?  This is beyond scary and outrage.

Lee Harvey Oswald was blamed for killing the President and Dallas Police Officer JD Tippit, a couple miles away around forty minutes later, despite photos show him at the doorway of the Texas School Book Depository, when the shots were fired in the first instance, and when the three tramps were marched by hours later!

Speaking of beneficial cognitive diversity, its funny how this only works in one direction in most peoples’ minds with regards to those “crazy conspiracy theories”.

I used to think that 9/11 was just a really lucky break for Bin Laden and Al Qaeda until I started looking at it more carefully. The more I examined it and thought it through, the more I realized that it was a whole lot more than just luck that it all went down the way it did. It was certainly no matter of just being lucky that the Twin Towers went down the way they did once you look at the matter carefully and honestly. Kevin Ryan has, and he’s well worth paying attention to, along with many others.

One problem of course is that there ARE a lot of crazy theories out there, and it takes time to sift the wheat from the chaff. Another problem is that the issue is so polarized that many people completely dismiss alternative explanations of any kind out of hand before giving them a fair hearing. Many others latch onto one explanation or another to explain the whole thing without doing their homework and then in turn dismiss any information which may disprove at least a part of the explanation. I find it virtually impossible to have a rational conversation with almost anyone about this subject, which I find both frustrating and fascinating all at once.

I certainly don’t claim to know all the answers, but I’ve looked at this enough to be completely certain that the official story can’t possibly be true.

If anyone feels they would like to introduce some beneficial cognitive diversity into their thoughts about what happened on 9/11, try giving these people a fair hearing:

While thermite was used to cut some beams in the lower floors (as evidenced by photographs taken of diagonally cut beams in the pile), what you have to explain is the ‘horseshoe’ shaped beam; there’s only one known weapon or force that can turn a massive steel beam into taffy in the time it took for those towers to fall: Nukes. No need to ‘wire’ the buildings, just a small tactical nuke with a low radiation signature on every other floor, detonated by remote control from Bldg. 7, which you then disintegrate to hide the evidence (and thousands of SEC criminal case documentation, just for good measure.).

If your explanation can’t account for the horseshoe beam, it’s incomplete or in error, and thermite isn’t an explosive, it’s a high powered cutting charge.

You know, the Government, and the Press SHOULD  be trying to unite us in wartime shouldn’t they?  But they should be doing it with integrity and responding to responsible ideas and questions as it occurs.

The problem is that the facts update so fast and not controllable so the media and the government really do not know what narrative to tell the American people.

How would an America work that had everyone on a chat board expressing their perhaps brilliant, perhaps crazy theories on everything … just when would the votes be called in.  When could they re-opened, how would people change their votes.

What would we do about situations that required action where studies of human decisionmaking say that the more people and the longer one takes to make a decision does not help that decision to be better.

I am for a kind of socialist system where people have their basic needs taken care of with the understanding that they have responsibillities to contribute in some – and at least do not damage.  With the hope that if people had time and resources to be good citizens that they would be.

However what if most people behaved as they do today, uncivilized, anti-social behavior, self-centered attitude many seem to today.  Some “ugly” thinks really need to get done in the world, like we need the police in our neighborhoods.  Somehow we Progressives think this is something to handwave off, or ignore.  I have to say that Iraq and Afghanistan are of value and were in dire need of help, and adjustment, at least from our narrative.  They may as well be close to America as to Tehran or “Rome”.

If America is the Rome of its day, then we should be thinking of ways to make it the best Rome possible – we cannot just jump out of history and off the planet  – and some issues such as JFK, Viet Nam, etc, 911, need to be explained, sooner rather than later, but later is important too.

Thinking up and planning 911 was no genius move that takes a spy network.  Coordinating it and finding people to willingly suicide, if that is what happened would have been the issue.

What do you think the costs could have been that would require state funding or coordination?  Box cutters, and airline tickets???

The thing is that we do not realize how much of our infrastructure is just out in the open for anyone to mess with if they so desire, and after virtual centuries of this how damn hard and expensive it is to protect this stuff.  Look at how many problems we have had with Internet seurity and no one has done a damn thing to fix it or plug it – probably on purpose.  There are ideas out there that would not be hard to implement that could fix this, but I honestly think the Orwellian part of our governments wants a back door system to be able to hear see and examine all our thoughts and documents.

Once they have enough info and understanding we can be herded into a virtual farm animal existence without any knowledge of what  a human being’s life was supposed to be like?  We will make ourselves into a stunted sub-species of human beings.

911 was basically a gamble that happened to go right for Al Qaeda.   It was a very lucky sucker punch at the US economic and political system.

Most dependencies were easily predicable and if by chance it had not worked it probably would not have gotten the reaction that it did, but still would have made Osama bin Laden a global household name. so it was a worthwhile gamble if you are a crazed anti-American terroristwith delusions of grandeur trying to unite a radical Muslim Caliphate.

And also consider this, those planes would have never been intercepted until the danger they held was known, and I’m not even sure if then, or if we did down the planes the fact that a single American soldier/pilot killed a planeload of innocent people to save Washington politicans and financial leaders would never play well, so one can read ambiguity into the Shanksville crash as well, but not for really nefarius reasons.

Brux, I think you’re giving “chance” too big a place in this deal. There are way too many “coincidences” in the 911 official narrative to recite here…. Just study the case honestly and you will find way too many holes for the official conspiracy story to hold up. Just like for JFK’s assassination.

Research it if you will, military intercepts of stray planes are routine and were (still are, of course) commonly practice.

Case in point, before the Pentagon was hit, the highest levels of decision making in the country were aware that planes were being used as weapons for way over an hour (no theory here, this is all well documented).

Do you think for a second, knowing that, that they would hesitate to protect one of the nation’s most important building from a stray plane coming their way?

Regular military procedure would’ve been to shoot it down before they reached that target, once the VP gave approval.

They not only didn’t do it, they didn’t even try.

So please, don’t insult everyone’s intelligence saying they “got lucky”.

But from our point of view, the Bush administration was maliciously negligent, and did so for the purpose of having an excuse to invade Iraq.

Recall that in 1993 Islamist terrorists attempted to knock over the towers with a truck bomb. (They also blatantly covered up the bombing of TWA Flight 800).
You are clearly ignorant of the sterling work of Peter Lance, who was writing on these matters BEFORE 9/11 and was was personally acquainted with both John O’Neil and Ronnie Bucca. If you don’t know who they are then read Peter Lance (“Triple Cross” and “Cover-Up”, also “1000 Years for Revenge”.)
The slavish leg-humping of the Clintons and Obama by leftists is a much bigger problem than some supposed “right wing nut jobs”:. The leftists control the media. By the way the “nut jobs” turned out to be 100% right about Soviet espionage all through the 40’s and 50’s, if anything it was worse than McCarthy thought. The recent history of the FBI “Enemies” by Tim Weiner should serve as a final verification of this fact, though the material has been well-covered by previous conservative writers. There is an outright system of mind control operating in the universities on this question, as documented by Haynes and Klehr in their book “In Denial”.

Far be it from me to defend Bill Clinton – whose anti-war work in the 60’s appears to have been part of MH-CHAOS’ infiltration of the anti-war left. But he clearly did exactly what he was supposed to with the 1993 bombing of the WTC – make it look like it was something that the US Gov’t wasn’t behind. In fact after the attack (and ensuing investigation) came the revelation of Operation Bojinka – which appears to be an early version of the contingency plans executed on 9-11-2001. So much for the W. regime lie about us never believing that planes could be used as weapons – in fact the G-8 summit in Milan (in the summer prior to the false-flag attack) had extra-surface to air missiles deployed to deal with just such an eventuality. Of course the NRO war games being played out that morning (involving computer simulations of planes being flown into buildings) also give even greater proof to Condoleeza Rice’s lies.

You need to check your head man – quit believing so much of your own right-wing propaganda. Al Qaeda came out of the Muslim Brotherhood (whom the US and Britain worked with since the 50’s – all in the name of anti-Communism) and the Mujahidin. Bryzynski now admits that he created the crazy-right-wing-fundamentalist uprisings in Afghanistan that drew the Russians in there in the first place. Then Col. Oliver North and Adm. Poindexter organized these yahoos (who always explicitly referred to both US and USSR as BOTH being the “Great Satan”) into a terrorist/guerilla secret army – while also working on plans to suspend the US Constitution, like REx 84-Alpha.

The US economy is a war economy. When the Soviets stopped cooperating with our little Kabuki theater in 1991 the US was suddenly left without an “enemy” to justify military spending and the roll-back of human rights and “civil liberties” here at home. Osama Bin Laden was the answer to the US’ prayers – if he wasn’t just working for them all along.

Bill Clinton was/is a GHW BUSH CIA guy. All he was doing was going along with the script. If they hadn’t found Monica’s dress to hang him with – the Republicans in Congress were going to use “Al Qaeda-Gate” to go after him – not so much to remove him from office as to delegitimize him and put the Democrats on the defensive. The same people that you would call Al Qaeda, if you found them in Afghanistan, were suddenly called the KLA – when found in Kosovo – the same people, trained in the same CIA/Oliver North ‘off-the-shelf/off-the-books’ training camps.
“Al Qaeda-Gate” was the ‘scandal’, that the Clinton administration was using the KLA ‘narco-terrorists’ in Kosovo to destabilize and further balkanize Yugolslavia – in accordance with US objectives (namely – undermining the only successful and independent socialist country in Europe, Yugoslavia; and grabbing the mineral wealth of the Trepka mining complex, etc.) I know this is true (the attempt at “Al Qaeda-Gate”), because I watched it happen live on C-SPAN. It was mentioned and then left aside for the more lurid and sensational ‘blue’ dress of Ms. Lewinsky. But one can surmise that the reason for the change was that “Al Qaeda-Gate” would have jeopardized a bi-partisan-consensus approved intelligence agenda – what Samuel Huntington called the “Clash of Civilizations” in monograph from ‘Foreign Affairs’ (CFR’s magazine) around that time.

Of course the idea that right-wing Christian fundamentalists and right-wing Muslim fundamentalists have some great disparity on policy or objectives is something of a farce – more or less revealed by W. kissing the Saudi king’s cheek…..

What really divides the Muslim world from the NWO-types, who run things here, is the difference in our banking systems. Interest, you see, is Un-Islamic (at least according to the highest court in Pakistan, in a decision issued within the last 25 years).

watch, the Agency voluntarily agreed to accelerate the release of
postponed JFK assassination documents, and did indeed release some

As to Bush’s role in the release of the JFK assassination records, there is more to the story.

The early release of records to NARA in 2004 pre-dated the appointment of the Assassination Records Review Board, specified in the JFK Records Act of 1992. President Bush sat on those nominations until he went out of office, as Clinton had before him. President Bush sealed them in his presidential papers. This forced the designated agencies to send new nominations for approval.

The reason some files were released by CIA and other agencies before review by the Board was that they constituted “segregated records” that had already been released to the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee on Assassinations investigations in earlier years and therefore did not qualify for further review.

To make matters worse, we discovered that President Bush had added a signing order to the JFK Records Act when he authorized it, which specified that any record the President did not want released would be not only postponed but withheld from review. We have no idea if he invoked it.

I was at the same NARA public forums and no one discussed UFO records at either one.

In addition to the postponed records, we keep discovering records that we believe are clearly related to the JFK assassination, since we pushed for a broad definition of that in the regulations implementing the Records Act. These records were never sent for review in the first place, so the Review Board never saw them. When we file for their review and release, the agencies use the restrictions of the Freedom of Information Act to deny release. The JFK Records Act had much different and more limited restrictions for postponement only, not denial.

Few courts will rule in favor of release if the agencies oppose it. Our history has become a commodity of the national security state and the people who classify these records are considered to be the final authority on their release.

Despite these problems, the JFK Records Act effected the largest release to date of classified records on any subject, and the collection at the National Archives has remained the most visited and requested, including genealogical records by the public. Only the Nazi War Crimes Records Act which released 8.5 million records and Wikileaks have bested it since. A similar law regarding release of records on the life and death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is still pending introduction in Congress by Senator Kerry and Rep. John Lewis.

Until we reclaim our history and demand full release, as President Obama’s Executive Order when he came into office does, of all classified records 25 years or older (Clinton had a similar order blocked by President Bush for implementation in the 1990s), which may be as many as a billion records according to John Dean, we cannot pretend to be a functioning democracy.

The Coalition on Political Assassinations,, worked for the implementation of the JFK Assassination Records Act from its inception and continues to fight for release of files. Russ Baker has spoken at our annual regional meetings in Dallas, Texas, held each November.

One can claim anything as knowledge or truth, even coming from sources beyond the material world, but any rational, scientific, logical or empirical approach demands both critical scrutiny and real facts. Thanks for this, Russ.

Ford told his press secretary Ron Nessen that he and his colleagues on the Warren Commission – “were very, very careful when we wrote our final report not to say flatly that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and was not part of a conspiracy.” Ford clarified that the Warren Commission was “very careful to say we ‘found’ no evidence of a conspiracy.”
The 9/11 Commission took this “we found no evidence” phrase to an extreme and used some form of it 36 times within its report.

This goes back along way now, but wasn’t one of the first things G. W. Bush did when he “assumed” the presidency to extend the classifiation status of documents related to the Kennedy assassination ?

    I seem to remember this … am I hallucinating or mis-remembering ?

I thought W extended the classification status of Poppy Bush’s documents?

Russ, I had knowledge of the JFK coup months before it happened and in the process of going on a tour through the South and telling the tour mangers that I was told of the plot but I went anyway and the Hootenanny tour ( these guys did not really like the civil rights views of folk singers) was used with extra buses as secret way to get agents and operatives around the South.

I even saw Bush and Hoover sitting next to each other late that afternoon after a pickup of strangers at a small airport between Huntsville and Houston.

Two  cops from Dallas got on with Oswald’s Double in custody, and he was later killed by shotgun blast that night.

My eyewitness report has been given to the proper authorities over the years and now that part about the Oswald double has been confirmed by Jim Marrs investigation.

Jim Marrs’ research and facts about the Oswald look alike being taken out the back door (side or alley door actually) of the Texas Theater in part 4 is what I discovered first when I talked to Butch Burrows, the Usher, in 93. I also was around when the look alike was murdered that night by a cleanup or some call “abort team” when I was told to “stay in my room because there is a guy with a shotgun looking for the man who shot Kennedy”…  or who they thought but it could have been a test from the double’s point of view and info I got from two agents who said they were working for NASA on the Chartered bus back to LA right around the time that Ruby murdered Lee Oswald. It is good to finally have my reporting on the truth confirmed.

    More of my report here:

    Peace, Jim

Thanks for this piece, Russ. I read Sunstein’s piece when it was originally published. One of my doc students showed it to me, and then about a year later I read the book-length response by David Griffin. It all was quite disturbing.

I get the sense that certain people use conspiracy theory differently than others–as a sort of code. Whereas the layperson uses it as a pejorative, my take is that people within certain power structures use it with a knowing wink directed toward each other (where the wink indicates that the truth or some semblance of it is creeping into daylight). Seems clear that Sunstein uses he latter version.
